The name Zabble was inspired by the Zabbaleen, the "garbage people" of Egypt. These are people including kids that have informally collected Cairo’s trash since the 1940’s. It is known that the zabbaleen find local markets for up to 80% of the waste they collect. They even raise pigs to consume all the organic waste thus creating a closed-loop system for Cairo’s waste. However, their livelihood and Cairo’s local circular economy has been threatened by recent measure passed by the government.
Zabble derives its inspiration from the Zabbaleen to enable a circular economy tomorrow by modernizing quantification and categorization of waste using technology today.
